Kessa knows no life outside of the lush Great River valley that insulates her tribal society. She wants nothing more than to be a hunter like her father, but the odds are stacked against her. Her patriarchal tribe is one obstacle; her small physical size is another. With the goal of becoming a hunter in mind, Kessa beseeches the favor of her people’s patron deity, the Mountain God. With the guidance of the Mountain God’s shaman, she feels she may be grasping for her last chance for the lifelong dream to come to fruition. But this drive to succeed may just be her own undoing, and result in her sacrificing her autonomy or conflict with her own kin.
Kessa will face many dangers in the Great River Valley. Not the least of which include ‘The Defiled’, the tribe of cannibals that reside on the southern banks of the Great River, as well as their terrifying deity: The Devoured Woman. And her seeking of supernatural aid in her quest to be a hunter may open other paths to most feared of the supernatural beings that reign across the Great River Valley, The Mad God.
